Krakatau

OVERRATED
  • This is not that big volcano that erupted in 1883 with the loudest bang in modern history, caused 30 meters of tsunami that killed +/- 40,000 people and released total energy equivalent to 200 megatons TNT while Hiroshima was "only" 20 kilotons
  • It's just a a tiny 300 meters height active volcano of the volcanoes called Anak Krakatau that came out of the sea in 1927 and today you can climb to the "level one" outer rim in less than perhaps 40 minutes
  • Sometimes it's calm peaceful and harmless, sometimes erupts and throws stones and rocks at you and when active you are told not to climb and where's the fun if you only look at natural firework display of a lifetime from a distance on the boat
  • You don't have to believe people saying it keeps growing at average 5 to 7 meters per year unless tourists who go there take the rocks back home as souvenir
  • What can you see from the top of a less than 300 meters height volcano is only big colossal old Rakata island at the distance which is taller (813 meters) a solid rock with trees from top to its coast, and Panjang, and Sertung, and the sparkling sea water below
  • It's not interesting because you've never seen in your life a new land formation created by the lava on the "back" side of the volcano, just a boring colossal view, brown and grey hardened lava and green lush trees below
  • It's not funny while you are having a delicious picnic lunch by the beach and suddenly from the nearby forest crawls out a monitor lizard about the size and look like a komodo dragon
  • And no, you dont wan't to swim and snorkeling by the Rakata coral reefs with many small colorful fish that looks funny like Nemo or angel or butterly or bat or a surgeon
